Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy has two parts, therapy and trancework. The therapeutic part is similar to general counseling and involves a variety of therapies. My work includes, but is not limited to, NLP, CBT, REBT , and Gestalt therapy.

The second part is hypnosis or trancework, which in some ways is very similar to meditation, although it’s different, as different types of brainwaves are involved. It feels similar during the first couple of sessions for most people, and then the trance deepens and can be compared to a dream-like state allowing the suggestions and new learning to take effect and leave a lasting impression.

Because the mind and body have a strong survival instinct, are holistic, and want to get better naturally, if there are any suggestions that are perceived as negative, they will not stick. Hypnosis and hypnotic coaching are very safe and effective therapeutic methods.

What is hypnosis/trance?

Hypnosis is a way to induce a trance. A trance-like state is a very natural altered state of mind. We often drift off to a trance-like state when we are reading a book, daydreaming, or watching TV. During that time, the conscious, critical mind relaxes and sort of drifts off, and the subconscious mind takes charge. Because the subconscious mind is hidden beyond our awareness, it seems like we are running on some sort of autopilot. We drift in and out of trance several times a day, and it’s a very natural and safe state.

What might being in a trance feel like?

It feels great 😊, it’s a very enjoyable, relaxing, and calming experience. Even if the work that needs to be done for some people involves unpleasant memories, because they are  in such a calm and relaxed state, some of the past experiences can finally be processed with relative ease. This is the time when everything is about you, it’s your time to get better.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Most people can be hypnotized, the exceptions would be babies, young children, anyone who doesn’t want to be hypnotized, and anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Everybody experiences a  trance-like state from time to time as a natural state of mind.

Can I be made to do anything or say anything I don’t want to when under hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is very safe and your critical ability is always present. No one can be made to do anything they don’t want using hypnosis. Whatever your  morals and ethical codes are during your waking state, they will be the same when you are in a trance. If any suggestion is given which conflicts with your value system or which you perceive as negative in some way, that suggestion won’t stick, and you may come out of hypnosis altogether. You are always in control and aware of your surroundings, and you can hear everything. Nothing happens without your consent, and the desired outcomes/goals are discussed extensively before trance work begins.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

During the first hypnotherapy session, you and your therapist discuss the presenting issue or issues, set priorities, and define the desired overall outcomes or goals of the therapy. During this first session, a lot of questions are asked to understand the history of an issue and past attempts to resolve it (if there were any), your lifestyle, support groups, and other issues important to the parameters of the particular case. Then, after getting your consent to be hypnotized, you are gradually lead into a relaxing hypnotic trance designed to start the process of improvement and the achievement of the desired goal/s.

There are times when only one session is required, although the average number of sessions to treat presenting issues is between four and twelve sessions. The follow-up sessions work toward making progress, and each session will be different, targeting different aspects of the issue until it is resolved.

How are Self–Help Hypnosis downloads different from one-to-one Hypnotherapy Sessions, from Mini-Courses and/or Customized Helpnosis, and what is it?

Both hypnosis audio downloads in any format and one-to-one therapy are very effective. The main difference between them is that one-to-one sessions are highly customized to your world, which can create faster or more profound results. That being said, Self-Help Hypnosis downloads target specific issues and each is designed to help a specific type of personality. So, the majority of people who want to target that same specific issue, and who in general fit the profile of the person that it was created for, can certainly benefit greatly.

One more difference I can mention is that one-to-one sessions normally form one part of an overall course of therapy, which will be malleable and adaptable depending on what is discovered during the therapy sessions, etc. Hypnosis downloads are usually for simple one-off issues or after a specific, well-defined result. One-to-one sessions are ideal for people who have never had hypnotherapy before or for some more complex issues.

Mini-Courses can offer a variation on having a course of therapy with some predictable common obstacles for most people, where adaptability is offered by having audio recordings targeting the same issue from different perspectives and/or different stages of being resolved.

Customized Helpnosis is also a variation of one-to-one sessions where customization to your unique circumstances is applied. Having regular Customized Helpnosis could provide the closest match to one-to-one hypnotherapy sessions as recordings will be adapted to your needs and your  progress as the therapy course goes on. The only downside of this format is that we would only have 20 minutes of Zoom call for every ordered Customized Helpnosis audio recording to get to know you, discuss the issue, give feedback, and decide on the next goal. Sometimes there is a need for you to talk to me while in a trance. Sometimes there is a need to do a session of discovery or a release of some sort, which will be best achieved during a one-to-one session. That’s why this option is ideal for someone who is already familiar with hypnosis, has had therapy before, and would like a budgeted option to experience the benefits of customized hypnosis.

How quickly will I experience benefits/results from hypnosis?

Results from hypnosis can be experienced immediately or over a period of time. There are many factors that go into a successful course of hypnotherapy. One distinction that needs to be mentioned, hypnosis is not magic, it’s not done at you and suddenly all the problems are gone. You have to make a conscious effort to get better while the hypnotherapist helps with the subconscious. Working on both simultaneously is what gives the most profound and lasting results.

Can young children benefit from hypnotherapy?

Yes, children from the age of six can be helped using hypnosis, and consent must be given by an adult to treat a child. However, I only treat adults from the age of 18 and above.

How deep will the trance be?

While on the one hand, the depth of the trance is important for some people, for most people it has little bearing. You will go into the hypnotic trance as deep as you need to, depending on what is appropriate for you, and still get benefits.

How do I know if I can be hypnotized?

Almost everyone can be hypnotized as trance is a natural state that we all go in and out of throughout the day. Some people may have difficulty relaxing at first, especially people who have an analytical profession or mind, but eventually, almost everyone can relax deeply and benefit from hypnotherapy.

Is it “mind control?”

No, hypnosis is not mind control. No one can be made to do anything they don’t want to do. If that was possible, there would be lots of articles everywhere exposing hypnosis, and hypnotists, including stage hypnotists, would be the richest, happiest people in the world. That’s obviously not the case. Hypnosis is a way to induce trance, which in essence is a way to communicate new learning and new behavior to the subconscious mind, but only those that have been vetted by the conscious mind of the client during the first therapeutic part of hypnotherapy can get through.

What about those stage hypnotists that make people do silly things?

To make a long story short, people play their part. Going to a hypnotist’s show there is an expectation of a performance, and some people don’t mind playing along. Of course, they are hypnotized, but you have to be willing to do the thing that is suggested. You will notice that there are usually suggestibility tests performed before anyone is called on stage, and that also plays a big role as some people are a little more suggestible than others. They are still fully aware of what they are doing and willingly follow instructions.

Will I remember what happened during a session?

You will be aware of everything, and you will remember everything. However, it may take a few days or weeks to fully process as there will be a lot of information, most of which will be new in some way. You will process it at a rate that is comfortable for you and fits your lifestyle. The exception is only when a state of somnambulism is achieved, which has happened in my practice and which is extremely beneficial. It happens with about 1 in 10 people, and those people can make a lot of positive changes in their life as they are considered to be extremely talented in experiencing hypnotic phenomena. Such a state, however, is very safe and may be perceived as falling asleep, and it doesn’t last longer than an hour.

How can I tell if I’m hypnotized?

It feels different to different people; it can be compared to drifting away while thinking about something pleasant or listening to music. Some people with vivid imaginations can see images or colors. Physical and mental relaxation is one of the first things people notice, a feeling of floating or lightness in the body.

Is it possible to “get stuck” in a trance?

No, you cannot get stuck. If someone is to go so deep as to enter somnambulism or an even deeper state, true unconsciousness, which happens very rarely, they will simply go into natural sleep and wake up once rested.

Why don’t more people get hypnotherapy sessions or use self-hypnosis?

It depends where you live; for example, hypnosis is widely used in the UK and is recognized even by the NHS for its effectiveness for quitting smoking as well as other issues. It has also become more popular in the USA. For many people, hypnosis still seems somewhat unknown, and they feel uncertain about it, even though the benefits of using hypnotherapy are well documented by scientific journals, and a variety of studies, since the 1950s.

In the last 15 years, there has been a lot of recognition and praise of hypnotherapy for a variety of issues, including weight management, smoking cessation, anxiety, chronic pain management, IBS , and many more.

In 2017, hypnosis was used for the first time as the only anesthesia for deep brain surgery, to cure the trembling hands of a 73-year-old man in Germany.

Can hypnosis help me?

It depends what you need help with. Hypnosis can be used for a variety of issues, including weight loss, anxiety, depression, pain management, stress, phobias, anger, grief, confidence, procrastination, sleep, addictions, performance, public speaking, smoking cessation, and others.

Can hypnosis hurt me in any way?

Since hypnosis was discovered and recorded over 200 years ago, there are no records of hypnosis hurting anyone. Hypnosis can only be used in a positive way. If any suggestion is made that’s perceived as negative it won’t stick, and you will come out of the trance.

Is hypnosis a consent state?

If there is a need, or if you want to come out of hypnosis during the trance work, you can simply open your eyes and end the trance work. No one can keep anyone in a hypnotic state against their will.

What if I’m under a doctor’s care or taking specific medication?

Hypnosis can complement medical care in many cases. You can speak to your GP and ask if hypnosis would be ok for you. Under most circumstances, there is no evidence that taking any medication is incompatible with hypnosis. There are some medical symptoms that are not compatible with hypnosis or require extra care, such as psychosis.
